Selling The New Normal
Artist Gina M's The New Normal: Summer School, is an immersive installation confronting America’s desensitization to gun violence. Transforming the gallery into a surreal classroom,
she invites viewers to experience an unsettling yet eerily familiar environment—primary colors, blinking lights, and playful educational tools—distorted to reveal a darker reality.
New works expand upon her signature bait-and-switch approach, drawing audiences in with childhood nostalgia before exposing the insidious ways violence is woven into daily life.
The American Alphabet poem reads: “A, begins Assault Rifle, a weapon of war. B, is for Bullet, that shoots through a door.” The chalkboard no longer teaches math but instead displays children’s unspoken fears. A patriotic desk precariously balances a tower of blocks, mirroring a fragile and failing system.
The work challenges audiences to reject this new normal, demanding a response rather than complacency. Her background in interior design, color theory, and large-scale public projects informs her immersive sculptural environments.
Her work has been exhibited at Gallery 825, Cerritos College Art Gallery, Huntley Gallery, Pomona College, the Irvine Fine Arts Center, MOAH, Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery, and the Orange County Center for Contemporary Art, among others.
The New Normal: Summer School turns education into confrontation—forcing viewers to ask, is this acceptable, and more importantly, how do we change it?
