EMPIRE OF DIRT is an exhibition of contentious works where the viewer can explore, connect and embrace the eccentric perspectives of artists who have continued to evade conventional labels.

Although the contemporary artists featured in EMPIRE OF DIRT are not in asylums or self mutilate, their stories, personal paths, inspirations and artistic processes range from the unorthodox to the extraordinary. However, similar to Van Gogh these 21 artists are able to render what is happening in their mind and in their world.

Poetry Night:

There will be at least one Poetry Night scheduled during the exhibition. Poets from the L.A. area will take turns reading poems inspired by Edgar Allan Poe. There is also an opportunity to submit black and white art and/or poetry to a short run poetry booklet with a theme of Edgar Allan Poe and Halloween.

July and Aug 2018 It's Time at OCCCA "Political times call for political art. The past year has shown that women's voices will not be silenced, no matter how hard the patriarchy digs in its heels. Artists have heard the call to speak up against structural violence and oppression. The urgency and candor of their work reflects that of this important cultural moment."Anuradha Vikram is a writer, curator, and educator. Her research focus is transnational futurism, combining media studies, theory of globalization, and critical race discourse with modern and contemporary art history. Vikram has guest-curated exhibitions for the Craft and Folk Art Museum, Shulamit Nazarian Gallery, Mills College Art Museum, ProArts Gallery, and the DeYoung Museum Artist Studio, and held curatorial positions at UC Berkeley Department of Art Practice, Headlands Center for the Arts, Aicon Gallery, and Richmond Art Center. She has contributed essays to journals including Leonardo, KCET Artbound, Artillery, Hyperallergic, Daily Serving, and OPEN SPACE, the blog of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and to catalogues on the work of Sonya Rapoport, Chitra Ganesh, Ana Mendieta, and Om Prakash, among others. Vikram holds an MA in Curatorial Practice from California College of the Arts and a BS in Studio Art from New York University. She is a Senior Lecturer in the MFA Social Practice Area Emphasis at Otis College of Art and Design, and a member of the Board of Directors of the College Art Association, where she chairs the Museums Committee.

In the spirit of the our annual “California Open”, TAG Gallery is proud to present its first ever “LA OPEN.” This juried exhibition will serve as a gateway for a diverse range of artists in the greater Los Angeles area to display their artworks on Museum Row, home to four major Los Angeles museums.

“This exhibition aims to inaugurate TAG’s calendar year by exhibiting works of local artists. Students as well as seasoned artists, and those who may be new to gallery exhibitions, are encouraged to apply.” The focus of this exhibition is to illustrate that artists are strong and impactful when they come together to facilitate dialogue amongst varied styles of works. To this end, the viewer and artist alike are encouraged to make unapparent connections between selected pieces and artists, revealing lay lines and webs of meaning that are sacred and unique to each viewer. The juror for the LA Open is artist and Homeboy industries substance abuse counselor, Fabian Debora. Born in El Paso, Texas and raised in Boyle Heights, California, Debora has been creating art since childhood. Beginning his art career in 1995 as a member of the East Los Angeles Streetscapers, Fabian was mentored by many Chicano graffiti artists and muralists, introducing him to creative expression in all forms. Over the years Fabian has created murals throughout East Los Angeles and continued to develop his style through work on canvas. He has been showcased in solo and group exhibitions throughout the United States, including Santa Barbara, CA, Los Angeles, CA, and Kansas City, MO. Fabian is currently a substance abuse counselor and art mentor at Homeboy Industries in Los Angeles.
