A note to my future self.

Under The Big Top Artist Gina M.

Here’s something I thought I’d write so the future me could keep track of what I did these last few months, because July and August are going to be very busy.

For instance, a few scenic drives to Ventura later, Dan and I finished my largest installation to date, Under the Big Top for LATENT ABILITY at the H Gallery, 1793 E Main St, Ventura, CA 93001. The opening was on June 29th. So many great friends came all that way to see it. We had a really good time. The show is open through July and August, but only on the weekends unless you make an appointment. I’m going to make a trip down there on Saturday July 27th. I’m sure it’ll be open then, if you want to join me.

Also . . .

I hope you were able to see the yummy food themed art, curated by Kristine Schomaker, at the exhibit Let Me Eat Cake, Too!! My piece Nature Cake sits on a garden pedestal. Every time I went there I got hungry for cake.

We also made a few trips to San Pedro last week, to The Loft, for a fun exhibit that pooled textile art with ceramics, titled Hard Mud, Soft Thread. I set up three of my pieces in a little vignette I called Ceramic Circus.

This exhibit will also be open Sunday, July 14, Sunday, Aug. 4, 1pm to 4pm, and during the San Pedro Art Walk, Thursday, Aug. 1, 6pm to 9pm.

Talking with some of the artists at the opening, I found out quite a few of them will also be in the

Ink & Clay 44 show at Pomona College opening in August. Wow, I still have to deliver my piece Handle With Care for this show.

Reception Date: Sep 07, 2019

Exhibit runs August 22, 2019 to November 21, 2019

One more thing, I posted it on social media already but I’m very excited about announcing this article, Dark Whimsy: The Work of Gina M. by a wonderful author Genie Davis. Here's a bit of it, "Gina M. creates works in layers of meaning and visualization. To see her work is like unpacking a series of wonderful and startling surprises." I still find it odd to read or write about the work I do. As an artist, it’s a very vulnerable place to be. But I’m sure with practice it gets easier.

You can go here to read the whole thing.

This week I’m in the studio working on many different projects. I’m on a creative high!

The submission of a collaborative project with artist Courtney Rackley for the exhibit Vs2019 for Los Angeles Art Association, 825 N La Cienega Blvd, Los Angeles, CA., is almost done. We were paired together randomly by the gallery and had to come up with something to be juried into the show. She paints dots. I build things. I’ll send out more pictures when it’s finished. It's going to be a big giant yummy cake party sculpture! ** UPDATE Two pieces were accepted, It's My Party and Funfetti!

I am also working on a top-secret collaborative project with another artist for her solo show. It’s an installation creating something very surreal. Can’t wait to tell you more about it. Here is a sneak peak of paper rocks I made for the vignette. It opens in October so there will be much more.

Believe it or not, I even made time to push forward on my own solo show, Through the Toy Shop and Behind the Curtain, opening January 21, 2020 with the reception on Saturday the 25th at the Huntley Gallery on the Pomona College campus. It seems like forever from now, but lots to do, it’s a really big show!

Look forward to more random posts later.

Thanks for your support.

Gina M.
