Soul Circus - collaboration
Deirdre Sullivan-Beeman and I are working on a joint project for submission to LAAA's group show in May. LAAA matched us up somehow and I think did a great job. If they threw our names in a hat, the hat knew what it was doing. If not, then thank you LAAA. You are a great match maker.
After a few emails, exchanging contact info and researching each others website, (http://www.sullivanbeeman.com/about.html) we agreed to meet.
The brainstorming went on for only a short time.
I've had a nagging call to open up a Lost and Forgotten piece and put a diarama inside.
She wanted to paint a wicked circus inspired idea; so, tadah, an idea was born incorporating both our twisted astethic.
Two more weeks until it's out of the kiln. She's alreay working on the oil painting aspect. Can't wait to see it all together.
Update: We finished and were accepted.
LAAA jury show VS - May 23 to June 5.
"SOUL CIRCUS,’ by Gina M and Deirdre Sullivan-Beeman, Ceramic, Oil painting, Mixed media 19”h x 19”w x 19”D $2800.00 Exploring the esoteric qualities of femininity and nature; ‘SOUL CIRCUS,’ by Gina M and Deirdre Sullivan-Beeman, represents our naïveté (the young girl) and our eerie magical sides (the elephant). The elephant’s truck symbolizing the phallic side of man but at the same time holds the Hindu way of thought found in the form of Ganesha – who represents protection; thus holding the young girl “tight as a drum” in his belly. The piece merges the realms of the eclectic mix of fine art with magical realism, employing the juxtaposition of modern day ceramics and 14th century traditional oil and egg tempera painting techniques.
